Cheney residents will get a chance to look into the future of the city’s landscape and offer their opinions to help shape what they want to see.  The City of Cheney will be conducting several Visual Preference Surveys the week of June 18 – 22 as part of the Unified Development Code update process.

 

Visual Preference Surveys are used by many local governments when making changes to their zoning codes.  Participants are shown a series of pictures which show various building and infrastructure styles.  The participants then score what they’ve seen from best to worst.  The pictures and responses are grouped into several categories like streetscapes, residential neighborhoods, and downtown business areas, to name a few.  The data from the surveys is then used by city planners and community partners to update the language of development codes to reflect what current members of the community want to see.

 

There will be 10 Visual Preference Survey sessions throughout the week to allow for all members of the community to offer their input.  Most of the sessions will be open to the general public, while one will target youth in the community, and another will target the senior community.  General sessions will take place at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Monday, June 18; 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19; 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 21; and 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, June 22 at the Wren Pierson Community Center at 615 Fouth Street. 

 

The youth session will take place at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20 at the Wren Pierson Community Center.  The senior session will begin at noon on June 20 in the Sessions Village Community Center of the Cheney Care Center at 2219 N. Sixth Street.  Lunch will be served at 11:30 for the senior session for those who RSVP to (509) 235-6196 (ask for Wayne or Briana).

 

Each session will take between 45 minutes and an hour.  Final results of the survey will be presented at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27 at the Wren Pierson Community Center.
