Cheney Fire Department
Volunteer Firefighter Program

General Information

The City of Cheney is located in the southwest area of Spokane County, approximately 20 miles southwest of Spokane, Washington.  The City of Cheney is home to Eastern Washington University.  Cheney Fire Department is a combination career/volunteer department which provides full service fire protection, fire prevention, hazardous materials response, rescue, and emergency medical services to nearly 10,000 residents.  The department responds to approximately 1,100 calls annually out of one station.  The department is made up of the Fire Chief, Secretary, seven career fire officers, four Resident Firefighters, and approximately twenty Volunteer Firefighters.

Program Overview

Cheney Fire Department currently seeks Volunteer Firefighters who are members of the community.  The Volunteer Firefighters respond at a moments notice to building fires, car fires, vehicle accidents, and hazardous materials incidents.

Volunteer Firefighters are trained to nationally recognized standards in the areas of fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials, and apparatus operations.  Volunteer Firefighters train once a week at the fire station to stay current on their firefighting skills.  The weekly training combines classroom sessions with hands-on practical exercises.

The Volunteer Firefighters may also be involved in other department activities.  The Volunteer Firefighters participate in several community parades which promote the department.  Volunteer Firefighters also participate in community fire prevention activities including grade school presentations, station tours, and general safety presentations.
