Planning & Zoning

Boards and Commissions:  The City Council relies on the Planning Commission to recommend land use policy and to hold public hearings to take comment on specific land use applications prior to decisions.  The Historic Preservation Commission is charged with inventorying the community's historic resources, and with making recommendations for listing on the local, state and national registers of historic places.  And the Board of Adjustments hears appeals of decisions by the Building Official, and also reviews applications for variances to the zoning code.

Codes, Regulations and Licensing:  Check here for shortcuts to land use and development codes.

Current Land Use Applications and Projects:  A summary of all documents currently under review in the Community Development Department is available, including status of the review and upcoming hearing dates.  If you have questions, please contact us for additional information.

Forms & Documents Online:  Looking for a land use application?  Visit this page for a complete listing of forms and documents used in the Community Development Department.

Historic Preservation:  Cheney's Historic Preservation Commission is a Certified Local Government (CLG), recognized by the State of Washington as meeting state and federal standards for our historic preservation program.

How Long Does It Take?  See a summary of 2008 land use application activity, including the total number of applications processed and the average time to complete each type of application.

Maps:  Check here for printable maps of the community in .pdf format.

Wayfinding:  The Community Development Department is involved with a community-wide study of signage and 'wayfinding' with the goal of making it easier for visitors and newcomers to find their way around town, and to locate places of interest.  Read the final report that was presented to City Council.
