Senior Planner

The City of Cheney is recruiting to fill a Senior Planner position within the Community Development Department.  This is an advanced, professional-level urban planning position performing a range of urban, land use and environmental planning work.  Work involves administering both current and long term planning activities to ensure compliance with the City Comprehensive Plan, development regulations, and the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA).  This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning and five years experience in city or county planning related to urban or regional planning; or a master’s degree in urban planning or a related field and two years of progressively responsible experience in city or county planning.  Enthusiastic, self-starters with experience in university cities are encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted for advertised positions only. Jobs are normally advertised in the Cheney Free Press and the Spokesman Review, as well as posted on this page. Entry Level Civil Service Positions are filled by establishing lists annually through the Civil Service Testing Process. Test dates will be advertised at least one month in advance.

Hiring Procedure


Applications will be reviewed for completeness and qualifications for the position. Selected candidates will be called for interviews and will be required to provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States. Upon an offer of employment, applicants must undergo a fitness for duty physical examination including drug testing.

The City of Cheney is a tobacco free, drug free workplace. Applicants required to carry Commercial Drivers License endorsements must agree to DOT random drug testing.
