Purpose statement

The major responsibility of the Cheney Historic Preservation Commission is to identify and actively encourage the conservation of the City's historic resources by:

  • initiating and maintaining a Register of Historic Places;
  • reviewing proposed changes to register properties;
  • raising community awareness of the City's history and historic resources;
  • and serving as the city's primary resource in matters of history, historic planning, and preservation.

What is the Local Historic Register?

Listing on the Cheney Register of Historic Places is an honorary designation denoting significant association with the historic, archaeological, engineering, or cultural heritage of the community.

Properties are listed individually or as contributing properties to an historic district.

Technical Tips on Preserving, Restoring & Rehabilitating Historic Buildings

The National Park Service provides guidelines for appropriate treatment, including repairs and maintenance, of historic buildings.  If you do not find the information you are looking for, please contact the Historic Preservation Commission for assistance.

Commission members are appointed by the Mayor and serve 3 year terms.

Monthly meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 609 2nd Street, beginning at 5:15 p.m.

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
