Reserve Officers

The reserve program is composed of those who aspire to be police officers or want to help their community by working side-by-side with the officers of the City of Cheney. Reserves are sworn police officers that fulfill many rolls that our full-time officer do. Our reserve officer position is a paid position.

Requirements for becoming a reserve officer:
  • Complete an employment application. A full background check that includes credit, criminal and traffic checks as well as personal and employer references will be conducted.
  • Pass the physical agility assessment - the physical agility test includes pushups (minimum 21), sit-ups (minimum 30 in 60 seconds), a sprint (300 meters in 71 seconds or less) and a 1.5 mile run (14:31 or less.) You must pass this test in order to continue processing.
  • Complete the following tests - a polygraph, oral board, psychological testing, and medical screening.
  • Attend, and pass, the Reserve Academy - applicants will then attend a 270 hour Reserve Officer Academy administered by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission
If you are interested in becoming a reserve officer or have any questions, please email Captain Rick Beghtol or call him at 509-498-9282.

Volunteers in Police Service

The Volunteers in Police Service (VIPS) is a national program which provides support and resources for law enforcement agencies.

The Cheney Police Department has several volunteers trained to issue parking tickets, and snow removal tickets, conduct residential vacation checks, serve as traffic control in case of vehicle accidents and crime scene security. They also assist in code enforcement, organizing and maintaining property records and latent prints.  The VIPS program is not designated to replace sworn or civilian police personnel. They are used to supplement existing functions to free up police officers to do what they are trained best to do - keep citizens safe and criminals off our streets.

If you are interested in serving your community by volunteering with the Cheney Police Department, fill out the VIPS form (PDF) and mail it to or drop it off at:
