Cheney Clean Sweep

Polish & Shine

Cheney's annual Clean Sweep event will be held in April 2021, but in a modified format due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A Modified Clean Sweep will be held the week of April 19-24, 2021.  Here's how it will work:

Instead of gathering in a City Park to start & end the event, we invite volunteers to comb the neighborhoods of Cheney on your own time, any time during the week of April 19-24, looking for litter. Work in small groups, with members of your immediate household, wearing appropriate face coverings and keeping safe distance away from other people.

This is a positive community event that encourages civic pride for the city and its neighborhoods. It’s just a little different this year!

Volunteers Needed: Volunteers will work on cleaning up a specific area of the city. Choose to work in your own neighborhood, or pick up a ‘hotspot’ map and concentrate on a particular area that needs some help.

Monday – Saturday, April 19-24:   Pick up a littler bag, an assignment map, and a Clean Sweep tote bag from outside the Utility Building, 112 Anderson RD (available 9:00 to 5:00, Monday-Friday, and 9-11 on Saturday).  Pick up litter wherever you find it, along streets and alleys (but ONLY in the public right-of-way), and return your litter bag to the Utility Building for disposal. (Keep the reusable tote bag as a thank you gift!)

Saturday, April 24, 9 a.m. to-12:00 p.m:   FREE disposal of household garbage, building materials and metals for City of Cheney Utility customers, at the Utility Building, 112 Anderson RD. (NO Appliances or Furniture accepted—Use the Large Item Pickup Service for these items!)  For City of Cheney Utility Customers - bring your utility bill as proof of residency!

Saturday, April 24, 9 a.m.-12:00 p.m:   FREE Passenger Tire Disposal (unmounted) at Les Schwab; truck & farm tires, and mounted tires, accepted for a small fee. Also accepting batteries!

Saturday, April 24, 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m:  FREE disposal of household hazardous waste at the Cheney Recycling Center, 100 Anderson RD.  Accepting household cleaners, solvents, drain cleaners, oven cleaners, oil based paints, antifreeze, brake or transmission fluid, pesticides, pool chemicals, etc.

Saturday, April 24, 10 a.m. to 2 .pm.:  Prescription drug take-back event at the Cheney Library parking lot, 610 1st ST.  This will be a drive-thru event where community members can drop off their unused or expired medications.  FREE giveaway to the first 50 participants:  Receive a locking medicine case or pouch!

Your Gear:   Apparel is important. Of course, we want you to look good; but more importantly, we want you to be safe. Wear clothing that fits the task of walking and doing yard work outdoors. This year, more than ever, we recommend disposable gloves, and of course, face coverings when you will be within 6’ of other people.
