Cheney Clean Sweep

Polish & Shine

Cheney's annual Clean Sweep event is usually held in April, but was POSTPONED this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

A Modified Clean Sweep will be held the week of October 5-10, 2020.  Here's how it will work:

Instead of gathering in a City Park to start & end the event, we invite volunteers to comb the neighborhoods of Cheney on your own time, any time during the week of October 5-10, looking for litter. Work in small groups, with members of your immediate household, wearing appropriate face coverings and keeping safe distance away from other people.

This is a positive community event that encourages civic pride for the city and its neighborhoods. It’s just a little different this year!

Volunteers Needed: Volunteers will work on cleaning up a specific area of the city. Choose to work in your own neighborhood, or pick up a ‘hotspot’ map and concentrate on a particular area that needs some help.

Schedule:

Monday – Friday, October 5-9:   Pick up a littler bag, an assignment map, and a Clean Sweep tote bag from outside the Utility Building, 112 Anderson RD (available 9:00 to 5:00, Monday-Friday).  Pick up litter wherever you find it, along streets and alleys (but ONLY in the public right-of-way), and return your litter bag to the Utility Building for disposal. (Keep the reusable tote bag as a thank you gift!)

Saturday, October 10, 9 a.m. to-12:00 p.m:   FREE disposal of household garbage for City of Cheney Utility customers, at the Utility Building, 112 Anderson RD. (NO Appliances or Furniture accepted—Use the Large Item Pickup Service for these items!)

Saturday, October 10, 9 a.m.-12:00 p.m:   FREE Passenger Tire Disposal (unmounted) at Les Schwab; truck & farm tires, and mounted tires, accepted for a small fee. Also accepting batteries!

Please Note:  Not all our normal Clean Sweep opportunities will be available this year (household hazardous waste disposal, shredding of personal documents, electronics recycling, etc. will return next year!)

Your Gear:   Apparel is important. Of course, we want you to look good; but more importantly, we want you to be safe. Wear clothing that fits the task of walking and doing yard work outdoors. This year, more than ever, we recommend disposable gloves, and of course, face coverings when you will be within 6’ of other people.

Our Sponsors:   HUGE Thanks to: Cheney Dental - Andrew Martinssen, DDS; Cheney Public Storage; Fellowship Baptist Church; Jarms Ace Hardware; Les Schwab Tire Center; TAJ Groceries; & City of Cheney Planning & Solid Waste Depts.
