The City of Cheney will hold a public meeting on Monday, October 10, 2022, during the regular Planning Commission meeting to receive public comments on the community's housing and community development needs and potential projects for next year. The meeting will be held in person, but participants may choose to attend by phone/videoconference (using Zoom), and instructions for attending the meeting can be found on the Planning Commission agenda page.
This meeting is a required element of the City's public participation program under the Spokane County Housing and Community Development program. The SCHCD Consolidated Plan contains strategies to achieve the following goals:
- Affordable Housing – Increase the range of housing options; expand the inventory of existing affordable owner and renter housing; increase opportunities for low- and moderate-income households to become homeowners; increase the supply of new affordable rental housing units for low- and extremely low-income households; ensure equal access to housing.
- Area Revitalization – Assist and where possible increase homeownership in Target Areas; enable low-income residents to play a greater role in community leadership, advocacy and development issues; increase capacity within the entitlement communities to achieve greater self-reliance; improve the infrastructure and physical environment; ensure the greatest benefit is to low-income persons/households.
- Economic Development – Create a competitive business environment in Target Areas to generate employment, business growth and consumer services; encourage funding opportunities for micro enterprise and small businesses; promote economic development planning to increase the capacity within Target Areas; assist families and individuals moving from poverty or public assistance to stability and self-sufficiency.
- Public Services – Encourage coordination between service providers in order to reduce overlap of services; ensure funding priority is given to essential basic needs; limit partial funding allocations to eligible high priority activities providing essential basic needs; strive to achieve maximum leverage on all public service funds expended.
